Google Maps dances the water to Trump and renames the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America

The Gulf of Mexico has evaporated overnight on Google Maps (or rather has done what has been its denomination so far). After Donald Trump ordered that the Gulf of Mexico to be called Gulf of America after his investiture as president of the United States just three weeks ago, the Mountain View company has decided to comply with the order of the new tenant of the White House and has buried the name of Gulf of Mexico, a nomenclature that had been used since the 16th century.

Anyway, The name change will only and exclusively affect Google Maps based users in the United States. Outside the American country, users will contemplate both denominations, the old and the new one.

On his first day as president of the United States Trump signed an executive order in which he ordered the federal authorities to make the name change effectivea modification that Trump justifies by protecting in the argument that the waters of the Gulf of Mexico (now Gulf of America) mainly bathe the coasts of the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and only partially the coasts of Mexico (and also of Cuba). In addition, changing the denomination Trump also intends to highlight the importance of this geographical area for the US economy.

Last Sunday Doug BurgumInterior Secretary of the new executive led by Trump, announced precisely in X that government maps had been updated to echo the new name of the Gulf of Mexico.

“In the United States the Geographic System of Names (GNIS) has been officially updated so that the Gulf of Mexico will be called Gulf of America”Explains Google in a statement. In this sense, “as we announced two weeks ago and in tune with our usual practices, we have begun to implement changes to reflect that update,” adds the US multinational.

Last month Google already advanced in X that the usual practice within the company was “applying name changes once they would have been updated in official government sources.”

Trump has vetoed in the last hours an AP journalist because the news agency refuses to use the new name of the Gulf of Mexico

During the last hours it has also been news that Donald Trump has vetoed a journalist from Associated Press (AP) To cover an event in the White House Because the news agency refuses to refer to the Gulf of Mexico with the new Gulf Nomenclature of America.

“It is alarming that the Trump administration is punishing AP for doing independent journalism”Julie Pace, Chief of Drafting of the news agency laments. “Restricing our White House access based on the language used by AP not only seriously undermines public access to independent information, but also violates the first amendment,” says Pace.

The White House correspondent Association has also shouted in the sky by the veto of the AP journalist. “The White House cannot dictate how they write the media and should not punish individual journalists because you do not agree with the decisions of its superiors,” emphasizes this association.

It is not the first time that Trump star in sounds fray with the media. During his first term at the head of the White House, the president expelled, for example, a press conference to a CNN journalist after he confronted the president with several critical questions.
