Amazon weighs $10 billion investment in OpenAI

Although its leadership in the AI industry is in question since Google launched the almighty Gemini 3 model last month, OpenAI maintains its attractiveness to investors. Proof of this is that Amazon would be considering investing in the ChatGPT parent companywhich could ultimately lead to an important change in the balance of power between companies currently operating in the field of AI.

According to Reutersthe e-commerce giant would currently be in conversations with OpenAI to consider an eventual investment in the company led by Sam Altman.

Amazon would be considering an investment of around 10 billion dollars in OpenAI, although the conversations between both companies would still be at a fairly early stage and would therefore be subject to eventual changes.

The agreement that Amazon and OpenAI would be working on today would also include the use of chips Trainium of the American multinational by the AI startup. Such chips directly rival chips from Nvidia and Google in the AI arena.

Amazon’s investment would further raise OpenAI’s valuation

If the talks between Amazon and OpenAI come to fruitionthe valuation of the company behind ChatGPT could rise considerably. Just a few months ago, in October, the company reached a valuation of around $500 billion.

This is not the first time that OpenAI and Amazon have forged a collaboration, as just a few weeks ago both companies announced an alliance in another area. Under this alliance, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will make its powerful EC2 UltraServers available to OpenAI so that the company can train and run its AI models.

If Amazon were to finally invest $10 billion in OpenAI, the latter company could gain independence from Microsoftwhich was once one of the first companies to provide financial support to the startup.

OpenAI is not, in any case, the only AI company that Amazon has its sights on, as the e-commerce company has already invested approximately $8 billion in Anthropic.
