YouTube stretches the duration of the Shorts like chewing gum, which can now be 3 minutes

By expanding the duration of the Shorts, YouTube hopes to permeate this format with a more immersive “storytelling”o, explains Todd Sherman, director of product at YouTube. “This was the feature creators asked for the most, so we’re excited to give them more flexibility to tell their stories,” Sherman emphasizes.

On TikTok, the mirror in which YouTube Shorts are viewed, the maximum duration of the videos hosted there has been extended on multiple occasions. In 2021, the social network from China expanded the maximum duration of its videos from 60 seconds to 3 minutes. And currently videos recorded directly on TikTok can last up to 10 minutes and videos uploaded to the application can have a maximum duration of 60 minutes, a change that the ByteDance subsidiary introduced just a few months ago to trip up YouTube and compete with this platform in the universe of long-form videos.

Instagram Reels users, for their part, enjoy somewhat less flexibility.where the duration limit is currently set at 90 seconds.

The 3-minute limit for Shorts will apply to videos that are filmed in square or vertical format. And clips posted before October 15 will not be affected by the update.

According to Sherman, YouTube is already working on improving recommendations with a focus on longer Shorts and the results will begin to materialize in the coming months.

Meanwhile, and thinking about those who don’t like Shorts too much, YouTube has launched the new batch function “Show less Shorts”. Users will be able to choose this setting in the three-dot menu located at the top right of the grid dedicated to Shorts in the home feed and will be confronted in this way with fewer short videos.

YouTube Shorts have also released updates to their playerwhich will have a more minimalist “look” and will allow creators to be in the foreground and viewers to concentrate 100% on the content shown there.

On mobile phones, Shorts will also raise the curtain on a new trends page so that the user can discover the most popular short videos in their country.. And very soon there will be “previews” of what people say in the comments directly in the “feed” dedicated to the Shorts (without the user having to go directly to the comments section).

YouTube Shorts will also release templates so that creators can get on the bandwagon of the latest trendsinclude the most popular sounds in their clips and give them a unique “look & feel,” says Sherman.

These templates can be accessed from the “Remix” button in the Shorts and selecting the “Use this template” option. Additionally, over the next few months Shorts users will be able to access YouTube content directly from the Shorts camera to more easily make “remixes” of their favorite videos.

Besides, YouTube has announced that it will begin integrating Veo, the AI ​​model focused on generating Veo video from Google DeepMind, in Shorts later this year. “Creators will be able to bring their ideas to life with even more extraordinary backgrounds and independent clips,” emphasizes Sherman.

YouTube Shorts are watched every month by more than 2,000 million users connected to the Google video platformcompared to 1.5 billion users a year ago. This was announced a few months ago by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, during the presentation of the company’s results for the second quarter of the year.
