Uber plans to launch a fleet of 100,000 robotaxis (with Nvidia as co-pilot)
Uber has its sights firmly leveraged on robotaxis, vehicles that seem destined to play a leading role in the mobility company in the coming years. The multinational aspires to have a fleet of 100,000 robotaxis in the future. And to make such an ambitious project a reality, Uber has teamed up with Nvidiawhose DRIVE AGX Hyperion 10 platform will make it possible to integrate autonomous driving hardware into vehicles from different automotive manufacturers.
Uber and Nvidia do not specify when exactly their fleet of 100,000 robotaxis will become a reality. However, the first vehicles equipped with Nvidia’s new DRIVE AGX Hyperion 10 platform are expected to be available in 2027.
Among the first Uber robotaxis with Nvidia hardware will be at least 5,000 Stellantis carsthe parent company of Opel and Citroën. In addition, Mercedes-Benz and Lucid, Tesla’s direct rival in the electric car market, are also working on vehicles with Nvidia’s DRIVE AGX Hyperion 10 platform.
Uber wants to become the largest autonomous vehicle network in the world
Uber already announced this summer its intention to metamorphose into a robotaxis provider. (cars that would ultimately compete directly with the real drivers affiliated with their platform). At that time, the American multinational announced that at least 20,000 robotaxis from the electric car manufacturer Lucid would be launched in different countries over the next six years.
Years ago, Uber, whose ambition is to become the largest robotaxis network in the world, decided to get involved in the development of its own autonomous driving technology, but eventually abandoned its plans in this segment of activity after one of its autonomous cars fatally ran over a woman in Arizona. Since then The company has changed its strategy in the autonomous driving segment to focus on forging alliances with third parties.
In some American cities, robotaxis from Google subsidiary Waymo can be booked through the Uber app. And the company has also forged agreements with Volkswagen and the Chinese company Baidu to give wings to its plans with a focus on autonomous driving.
