TikTok users in the US pack their bags and move to the Chinese app RedNote

If TikTok does not agree to divest from its US subsidiary before this Sunday, the famous social network will inevitably go black on the other side of the pond. And the American users of this platform are already preparing for a possible “blackout” of TikTok by looking for alternatives to the ByteDance subsidiary. One of the most popular alternatives among TikTok users in the United States is another app from China: RedNote.

The so-called “TikTok refugees” (which is what users of the ByteDance social network in the United States call themselves) are migrating massively to RedNoteso much so that this application became the most downloaded this Monday in the Apple App Store in the United States.

RedNote, which hatched in 2013, is a Tiktok rival that is extraordinarily popular among younger people in its homeland, China, and also in Taiwan and other Mandarin-speaking countries.

This alternative platform to the ByteDance social network has 300 million monthly users at its side and is a kind of amalgamation of TikTok and Instagram. Its users, who are mainly young women living in urban areas, share a wide variety of lifestyle tips on RedNote, from those related to fashion to those related to the world of dating. Like TikTok, RedNote provides shelter to a large army of influencers who end up on this platform attracted by succulent incentives.

The United States Supreme Court must rule in the coming days on the law approved a few months ago by the United States Congress that forces TikTok to divest itself of its business in the United Statesor disappear from the application stores in the North American country. However, in a hearing held last Friday the magistrates of this court seemed to lean in favor of applying the rule because they understood that it is fully constitutional.

In addition to RedNote, TikTok users in the United States are also landing en masse on Lemon8

TikTok has, however, repeatedly rejected the spin-off of its US business and its lawyers insist that The rule aimed at its closure in the United States violates freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

On the other side of the pond TikTok has 170 million users and many of them are taking refuge in the arms of RedNote, which In recent days it has been flooded with thousands of posts in which new users of this platform are taught to become familiar with its functionalities. and also learn some basic phrases in Mandarin Chinese.

However, since RedNote is like TikTok, a social network from China, Some users report that this platform censors comments critical of the Beijing Government (which would apparently have a lot of influence on the app). And in Taiwan, officials have, in fact, restricted access to RedNote to avoid possible security risks.

After a massive landing of American citizens in RedNote in recent days, Some Chinese users of this platform have jokingly called themselves “Chinese spies” in clear reference to the fear expressed by the United States authorities that TikTok, whose roots are also in the Asian giant, can be used by Beijing as a tool for espionage and political manipulation.

RedNote’s Mandarin Chinese name, Xiaohongshu, literally translates into English as “Little Red Book.”although the platform denies, as some believe, that its name is a nod to the book of the same name by Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong.

Beyond RedNote, many TikTok users in the United States are also migrating to Lemon8, an app attached like TikTok to ByteDance’s orbit (and with roots, therefore, in China). By sharing the same parent company, TikTok accounts can be easily transferred to Lemon8 and the user also has the possibility of synchronizing both platforms and simultaneously publishing identical content on both social networks. In addition, Lemon8, whose downloads on iOS and Android tripled last week, is an application based on the same algorithm that governs its “big sister” TikTok and, beyond being very similar in terms of operation to the app short videos, provides the user with additional functionalities that are seen in the mirror of platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest.
