Google begins to pepper AI search results with advertising Overview
Google is determined to monetize the search results generated by the AI Overview functionality (because without advertising, after all, no money enters its coffers). The internet giant is starting to place ads next to the AI-generated summaries that top search results in the AI Overview feature. The imbrication of advertising in AI Overview is born from Google’s determination to demonstrate to investors that AI projects can really put money on the table.
It causes some investors, after all, anxiety that The technology on which the AI Overview function anchors could eventually cannibalize the traditional search business of the Mountain View companywhich is also the most lucrative division within Google.
In May the company already announced that it would begin experimenting with advertising in the summaries emanating from AI Overview and now the announcements will begin a broader landing in such summaries. For now, advertising in AI Overview will reach only the eyes of American users of the Google mobile app.
Sponsored panels placed above, below and within the summaries generated by AI Overview have begun to suggest to the user products directly related to the searches undertaken with the help of this functionality. And if the user confronts, for example, AI Overview with the question of how to remove grass stains from jeans, next to the answer provided by Google with the help of AI there may be, for example, advertisements for detergents or stain remover.
Initially Google has no intention of share advertising revenues with those publishers whose materials are cited in the summaries generated by AI Overview.
AI Overview ads are a new monetization opportunity for Google
Google places AI Overview summaries at the top of pages in some search results. This feature was hatched last May in the United States and was initially met with a lot of criticism for displaying inaccurate information and significantly reducing the need to click on websites that would otherwise pocket money for user visits.
The company led by Sundar Pichai has also announced that it will begin to include links within the summaries generated by AI Overviewsince a series of initial tests show that these types of links translate into more traffic for websites than those links that appear separately under the summaries generated by AI, explains Rhiannon Bell, vice president of user experience at Google Search.
Another novelty presented in society by Google are the so-called search results organized with AIa new feature that sorts results into drop-down lists of suggestions tailored to the user’s searches and account history. This function will be limited for now to suggesting recipes in an organized manner to users who carry out gastronomic searches in the Google mobile app.
The Mountain View company has also introduced improvements in Google Lensits visual search function, so that from now on it can also process videos and voice and not just photos and text.
